Behind the Canvas
Bula Barua is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed Fine Artist and a published author of short stories and poetry. She has won several prestigious global and national awards for her ability to capture and communicate emotion and aesthetics through her beautiful artworks. Her works are included in many private and public collections and galleries around the world, including Los Angeles, New York, Taiwan, Siberia, Italy, Miami, Moscow, Venezuela, Paris and more.
Bula was raised in the USA by immigrant parents from Assam, India. As a young adult, Bula divided her time between performing as a solo jazz vocalist in musical concerts and performing as an actress in plays and off-Broadway musicals. Bula also loved spending time in the areas of sketching, painting, writing, traveling, reading, cultural studies, and composing music as a pianist.
Bula attended Purdue University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Health, Kinesiology and Leisure Studies. From there, Bula decided to build a career in the area of User Experience Consulting and Fine Art. Though some believed it was an unusual combination, Bula believed her passion in both fields would lend to each other beautifully. Her dreams eventually led her to Los Angeles, CA.
Today, Bula works as a Fine Artist, specializing in oils, mixed-media and acrylics, and is particularly noted as a modern surrealist for her ability to express an idea with a minimum of effort and economy of touch. Her subject matter is often the intimate world of a sensitive woman who discovered poetry in the simplest acts and gestures, and her delicate, subtle works have been shown at many official Salons throughout the world. For her mixed-media pieces, Bula loves exploring the dramatic potentials of canvas, paper, aluminum, plexiglass, stones, and precious gems.
Bula's artworks have expanded far beyond the canvas. In 2016, Bula's fine artwork was featured on Converse shoes, exclusively through the Italian retailer YourStyle. In addition, Bula was commissioned to travel to Hanzhou, China to personally design 5-star beauty spa, Adlina. The spa featured 14 of Bula's Limited Edition Prints, as well as her personal interior art design and touch.
Bula considers herself to be blessed as an artist. She also believes in the power and necessity of artists to give back to their communities. Thus, Bula is an Ambassador for Taiwan’s “Say No to Drugs” program, and spends much of her time creating art for underprivileged youth and "The Way to Happiness." Bula also regularly delivers seminars for artists and entrepreneurs to help them become more successful in their chosen fields. As an author, Bula's first book "Sand Nigga" was published in 2010. Bula is currently working on her second work, "The One."
Bula is not just a Fine Artist, but she is a Humanitarian who is trying to change the world for the better.
